About

Deb Shababy, I Love KitchensHi! I am Deb Shababy, and I’ve been a professional kitchen designer for 20 years. It’s funny, but when you do something you are passionate about, many other things that you love “rotate” around it. My blog will “rotate” around kitchens, culinary subjects, good kitchen design, product trends and other favorite activities. I hope to give you good tips, fun projects, and cool things to look at.

The kitchen is the heart of your home.
(I always love telling people that!)

  1. Hi Deb, love your style and your blog. We’re in the midst of a minor kitchen-redo and I’m now challenged with the lighting. Do you recommend any on-line communities where I can post pictures and ask for feedback and ideas??? Is this something you can help me with?

Thanks in advance for your response.

    • Electrical can be tricky…so much going on with lighting design in kitchens now. I personally like recessed ..low voltage…halogen or LED’s. Find a qualified electrician who knows your city or township codes. He should be able to access what can or cannot be installed. If doing a darker granite..use more lights. Recommend Zenon or LED under wall cab’s. Lighting is challenging. I always had to visually see each home WITH electrician before ever making a lighting plan. Your existing mechanicals have a lot to do with it.
      Good luck!

  2. Hi Deb,

Are you familiar with any online communities where I can post pictures and ask for feedback regarding our kitchen renovation? We’ve recently made some changes to our kitchen (cut down wall between kitchen and great room) and I have some serious issues with the lighting!! I need some help! Thanks in advance for your response.

    • Our granite arrives on Wednesday … maybe then it will begin to take some shape, but in the meantime … I really need some advice on lighting and would love to put some pics out there for feedback. Thanks again!!

  3. Thanks Deb. I’ll check out Gardenweb’s forum. I installed a fabulous light above our dining room table … LOVE IT .. but now it commands the area and I need to accommodate it. Here’s the light: http://www.uttermost.com/p-1014-vetraio-3-lt-kitchen-island.aspx?EID=55&EN=Category

The cut between rooms has made it a little tricky in that we still have a header separating (flat ceiling in kitchen; textured in great room). We hung two pendants (salvaged from the old kitchen) and it doesn’t look good at all. Decided on recessed above island because we were hoping to create a lighted area above new granite inbetween kitchen and greatroom – where the 82″ granite will be. Goal was to bring the two rooms together and have more seating for entertaining in the kitchen area. But I can’t seem to figure out how to blend in the lighting!!!

Access to the electrical isn’t a problem since we’re in a ranch – trusses in the attic.

Is there any way to send a picture to you???

    Thanks again!!

    Susan

  4. Hi Deb

My name is Nick Cox, I am with the Hampshire Company a manufacture of custom and semi-custom cabinetry located in Piqua, Ohio. In my recent search on Houzz I located your name and wanted to reach out and see if your business has a need for either a custom or semi-custom cabinet product.

    Thank you,
    Nick
